This professional development graduate course is designed to train teachers in the basics of multi-sensory, explicit, direct, sequential, cumulative, analytic, synthetic, meta-cognitive, diagnostic/prescriptive instruction in the structure of English for reading, writing, and spelling (the Orton-Gillingham approach- not a specific program - also referred to as Structured Literacy) including the 5 parts of instruction as presented by the National Reading Panel- Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency,
and Comprehension. The course will also train teachers about dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, how those brain differences impact success within the classroom setting, and teaching strategies and techniques to best support diverse learners.
